The exact amount of money lost to online fraudsters in the UK every year is difficult to determine as it involves various types of scams and frauds. However, according to the latest annual crime report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2020, there were an estimated 3.7 million cases of fraud in England and Wales during the previous year (2019), which includes both online and offline fraud. Specifically regarding online fraud, the report highlighted that 41% of all fraud incidents in England and Wales were categorized as “computer misuse” or “hacking” offences.
